What is CT SCAN OF BRAIN & PNS?

CT Scan of Brain & PNS (Paranasal Sinuses) is an imaging procedure that uses CT scanning to evaluate both the brain and the paranasal sinuses. It is often used to diagnose conditions such as brain injuries, tumors, sinus infections (sinusitis), sinus cysts, or nasal polyps.

The scan provides detailed images of the brain and surrounding sinus cavities, helping identify structural abnormalities. Contrast dye may be used to enhance the images, especially for soft tissues.

The procedure is non-invasive, quick, and generally well-tolerated, though mild discomfort may occur from the contrast injection.

What to expect & how to prepare

A CT scanner takes many X-ray images from different angles and combines them into cross-sectional pictures. You lie on a table that moves through a ring-shaped scanner.

• Contrast: some CT studies use an iodine-based contrast injection and some do not. If contrast is planned, the centre may ask you to avoid food for a few hours and to bring a recent kidney function report.
• Tell the staff: mention kidney disease, diabetes medicines such as metformin, asthma, previous reaction to contrast, or any allergy before the scan.
• Metal: jewellery and metallic items in the scan area are removed; you may be asked to change into a gown.
• Fasting: a plain CT without contrast normally needs no fasting — confirm with the centre which type is booked for you.

CT uses ionising radiation, at a higher dose than a plain X-ray. Tell the staff if you are pregnant or think you might be, so the request can be reviewed.
