What is CMV?

CMV IgM (Cytomegalovirus Immunoglobulin M) is a blood test used to detect IgM antibodies against Cytomegalovirus (CMV), which indicate a recent or active CMV infection. Unlike IgG antibodies, which show past exposure, IgM antibodies are produced early in the infection process, usually within the first few weeks.

A positive CMV IgM result suggests that the individual is currently infected or has recently been infected with CMV. This test is particularly important in pregnant women, as primary CMV infection during pregnancy can lead to congenital CMV and cause severe birth defects.

The test is also used to monitor immunocompromised individuals, where CMV can reactivate and cause complications.

What to expect & how to prepare

CMV is performed at a diagnostic centre or hospital lab. A trained technician collects the required sample (commonly a blood draw, urine sample, swab or an imaging scan, depending on the test) and sends it to the lab for analysis. Most routine tests take only a few minutes to sample, with reports typically ready the same day or within 24–48 hours.

• Fasting: some tests require 8–12 hours of fasting (water is usually allowed). Ask the centre when you book.
• Medication: tell the lab about any medicines or supplements you take, as some can affect results.
• Timing: certain hormone and biochemistry tests are best done in the morning — confirm the recommended time.
