What is CD20?

CD20 is a cell surface protein predominantly expressed on B lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell) and plays a crucial role in B cell activation and proliferation. It is not present on plasma cells or hematopoietic stem cells, making it a useful marker in immunophenotyping.

Clinically, CD20 is commonly used to identify B-cell lymphomas, including non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), and to differentiate these from other hematologic malignancies. Monoclonal antibodies targeting CD20, such as rituximab, are used in the treatment of B-cell malignancies and autoimmune disorders, as they target and deplete malignant or dysfunctional B cells.

CD20 is also used in diagnostic assays, such as flow cytometry, to aid in the diagnosis and prognosis of lymphoid malignancies.
