What is B2?

B2-Microglobulin is a small protein found on the surface of many cells and is released into the blood when these cells break down. The B2-Microglobulin test is used to evaluate kidney function, particularly in conditions like chronic kidney disease (CKD) or kidney failure, as its levels rise when kidney function is impaired.

It is also used as a marker for certain types of cancers (such as multiple myeloma or lymphoma) and in the monitoring of immune system disorders. The test involves a blood sample, and there are minimal risks associated with it.

What to expect & how to prepare

B2 is performed at a diagnostic centre or hospital lab. A trained technician collects the required sample (commonly a blood draw, urine sample, swab or an imaging scan, depending on the test) and sends it to the lab for analysis. Most routine tests take only a few minutes to sample, with reports typically ready the same day or within 24–48 hours.

• Fasting: some tests require 8–12 hours of fasting (water is usually allowed). Ask the centre when you book.
• Medication: tell the lab about any medicines or supplements you take, as some can affect results.
• Timing: certain hormone and biochemistry tests are best done in the morning — confirm the recommended time.
• Report: always have a registered doctor interpret your B2 result rather than self-diagnosing.
