What is AST (SGOT)?

AST (Aspartate Aminotransferase), also known as SGOT (Serum Glutamic-Oxaloacetic Transaminase), is an enzyme found primarily in the liver, heart, muscles, and kidneys. The test measures the level of AST in the blood and is commonly used to assess liver function or detect liver damage due to conditions like hepatitis, cirrhosis, or liver injury.

Elevated AST levels may also indicate heart problems (e.g., myocardial infarction) or muscle damage.
