What is Ammonia?

The Ammonia Test measures the level of ammonia in the blood. Ammonia is a waste product formed from the breakdown of proteins and is usually converted into urea by the liver.

Elevated ammonia levels can indicate liver disease (such as cirrhosis or hepatic encephalopathy) or kidney dysfunction. It is also associated with conditions like urea cycle disorders or metabolic diseases.

The test is typically performed using a blood sample, and risks are minimal, involving slight discomfort during the blood draw. High ammonia levels may lead to confusion, fatigue, and in severe cases, coma.

Most routine tests take only a few minutes to sample, with reports typically ready the same day or within 24–48 hours.
